When I was a young man I rambled and I gambled I flirted with the women pretty young and fine I didn’t have a fear, I would drink whiskey and beer And the bottles of the nectar of the fruit upon the vine Won’t you open another bottle ‘Cause my throat is thirsty and dry And I sure would like a taste of that whiskey One more time before I die I rambled and I roamed but I never found a home ‘Cept for barrooms and bordellos on the dark side of town I partied through the night, lord it made me feel alright And in the morning I would find someplace to lay my body down Chorus Well I never had a sweetheart who could cook or keep a home But the whole world was my lover when I drank a bottle through And the sweetest kiss I tasted was the one that got me wasted The sweet kiss from the bottle of the rare old mountain dew Chorus Well now I am an old man, my life’s a memory There’s times I can’t remember the things that happened then But there ain’t no shame or sadness in my life of drunken madness And if I had a second go, you know I’d do it all again Chorus Chorus

Only a Woman 03:00
Boys I may not be that old but I got a story that should be told though it’s been told a thousand times before It’s all about the big surprise when you look the mirror in the eyes and the mirror says “boy you’re getting old” Don’t you blame it on the liquor like the Mormons say even God’s getting wasted on the Judgment Day I hate to say it but I do believe it’s true only a woman could have done this to you Now I’m just like those other guys and both of us I know we try to be civilized and get on through the day but let a woman get involved and there’ll be problems to be solved and pretty soon your hair is turning gray Don’t you blame it on the night times you sing and dance away you know that’s the only way to make it through the day I hate to say it but I do believe it’s true only a woman could have done this to you So all you boys still running free won’t you learn a thing or two from me don’t answer when they knock upon your door all that glitters is not gold and that perfume’ll make you old and you’ll wonder what the hell you done it for don’t you blame it on the livin’, though it too clean never saw a good time make a man mean I hate to say it but I do believe it’s true only a woman could have done this to you

Well it was raining the day I met you your hair was soaking wet It was raining the day you left me with that bastard in his corvette Well I ain’t gonna let it hurt me I ain’t gonna cry no more in this land of the free I’ll just purchase me a .44 Well you didn’t want me now I’m a wanted man I’ve got half the state of Arkansas chasing me across this land And if they ever catch me I’ll have no regrets ‘cuz you and your new boyfriend got what you get I didn’t get mad, I just got even when the smoke had cleared you were lying there bleeding Well who would ever think that I was such a killer But oh what a thrill I got when I pulled the trigger Now I’m a wanted man, got the law chasing me But I won’t mind living prison ‘cuz I ain’t never been free Now when the judge looks down at me and says “forty years is what you get” I’ll look him in the eye and say “I don’t give a shit” I didn’t get mad, I just got even when the smoke had cleared you were lying there bleeding Well who would ever think that I was such a killer But oh what a thrill I got when I pulled the trigger Well here in Huntsville Texas is where you’ll be finding me serving forty to life for my crimes against society but I guess the moral is, that guns don’t really kill Well I guess it’s just people expressing their free will

She was fifty four going on thirty five married seven times and working in a dive still looking for that sweet thing to make all her dreams come true all that’s left are memories and a jukebox of heartbreaking songs all one can ever do is keep on carrying on Honky Tonk Angel you’re looking good to me it’s five O’clock in the morning I’m feeling down and lonely the jukebox plays on another lonesome lovesick song it’s closing time and neither of us wants to be alone Here’s a toast to memories be thankful for what we’ve got thankful for what we’ve received no regrets for what we have not cheers to you baby let’s smash our glasses down if you’ll be my Juliet I’ll buy the next hundred rounds Honky Tonk Angel you’re looking good to me it’s five O’clock in the morning I’m feeling down and lonely the jukebox plays on another lonesome lovesick song the memories linger on long after the feeling’s gone the memories linger on long after the feeling’s gone

Sometimes I think your love is far too much for me I look in your eyes and it hurts me what I see ‘Cause I know one day I’ll be gone And I’ll leave you with this song And a beat-up box of faded memories When I first met you were pretty, young and free From that moment I knew you were right for me And though the years have travelled by That look’s still in your eye And I will fall in love again with what I see Oh darling you know that I’m still in love with you But one day I’ll be gone and you know that is true And on that day you’ll see That both of us are free So tonight let’s live our lives as lovers do One day I’ll be gone Long long gone

Well mama’s in the kitchen, Papa’s in his chair older brother with ducktails, greasing down his hair. Stars and bars and so much foolish pride, passing the time under those southern skies Well how do you keep them down on the farm? Why cook up some collard greens, bread made of corn. Pass another beer throw a log on the fire my eye’s on Sadie, she’s my heart’s desire Kenworth and Peterbilt he’s a truck driving man payin’ his dues in a country band. If the whiskey don’t kill him, then the women surely will does what he likes, does as he feels. Sitting and talking making good company no fussing or fighting, don’t dare to disagree. Give the shirt off his back, do whatever he can he’s stubborn as a goat, he’s a Southern man. Red dirt road down an old rural route the house is falling down, the old car’s worn out the roof’s caving in on the corner store, kudzu vines growing up through the floor. Now that we’re older, we can look back and say how good it was then in those golden days. Sure as we’re born with the graveyard dead remember what we did, forget what we said.

When the day is done and the night is dark I think of you though we’re miles apart hope you’re feeling fine in your mind What was the name of that song you played we didn’t care and we weren’t afraid so hear your guitar playing in my head Hitching down the motorway two by two little white lines got nothing on you Rock-n-roll radio playing all night long Sitting on the sidewalk drinking wine I was yours and you were mine neon flashing and the cars go rolling by Well I don’t have a stamp to send you a card sang this song and I hope you heard If I cross your mind then have a drink on me When the day is done and the night is dark I think of you though we’re miles apart hope you’re feeling fine in your mind hope you’re feeling fine in your mind hope you’re feeling fine in your mind

Well you ought to see my blue eyed Sally She lives a way down on Shinbone Alley The number on the gate is the number on the door And the number in between is the grocery store Stay all night and stay a little longer Dance all night and dance a little longer Pull off your coat, throw it in the corner I don't see why you don't stay a little longer You can't go home if you live by the mill 'Cause the bridge washed out at the bottom of the hill The big creek's up and the little creek's level I plow my corn with a double shovel Stay all night and stay a little longer Dance all night and dance a little longer Pull off your coat, throw it in the corner I don't see why you don't stay a little longer Take your gal and pat her on the head if she don’t like biscuits feed her cornbread and the girls’ on Cripple Creek ‘bout half grown jump on a man like a dog on a bone Stay all night and stay a little longer Dance all night and dance a little longer Pull off your coat, throw it in the corner I don't see why you don't stay a little longer

Yeah, my good friend come by, he got some killer bud Smoke it on down, now we’re feeling good Cruising down the street, feeling alright All the girls say “These guys are out of sight!” I said, “Hey baby baby come along with me Come back to my crib to see what’s to see” She says her mama’s calling and she must go home So here I am out in the streets alone Cruising down the street sunshine in my face I’m feeling all right yeah I’m in my place Along comes a man in a uniform and says, “Hey, buddy, buddy, you better move along” I said, “I ain’t got nowhere to go to!” He says, “Big Brother will take care of you!” And like a dog that don’t got no bone here I am out in the streets alone Out on the streets alone Out on the streets alone Out on the streets alone Life is so strange when the street’s your home Welcome to the nineties, the decade of surviving My friends are out dumpster diving Drowning in a sea of garbage and debris Read my lips: This is the home of the free Chorus

Lostville 05:35
Looking out at the sleet and snow And I’m wondering what to do Got a feeling I’ve been here before Another blast of deja vu A different window, a different time Another town, another name But when the feeling comes over me You know it all just seems the same And I can’t make any sense Of the writing on the wall On days like this, it seems to me I don’t know anything at all And I wish that I was weightless Blown on by the wind But I guess I’m stuck in lostville once again There ain’t no point in memories When reality is low And there ain’t no point in bickering About what you think you know And your stories have all been told Seems like a million times or more When the lights go down all you’re left with Are the dreams you had before Chorus

Cold Night 04:23
Hey, I’m in trouble I’m fallen again I ain’t seen the daylight Since I don’t know when Pour me some whiskey Pour me some rum Buy me a drink And I’ll buy you a song Cold night at my window Won’t you leave me alone I ain’t got no blanket And I’m chilled to the bone I saw an old man Walking bent to the ground I asked, what are you looking for What have you found? He didn’t say nothing Just walked right on by So I looked at the ground And I looked at the sky Chorus I made a long journey I walked many a road I was beaten and scarred As I carried my load Now I wait for the morning I look for the sun As I lie here alone And wait for you to come Chorus

Saloon doors fly open, everyone swilling whiskey Madame whores is packed with vermin, slimy and sleazy Someone cuts the deck and the cards they go flying Over in the corner, Snake Eyes throws the dice Come on seven, come on eleven See you on the flip side of heaven Come on seven, come on eleven See you on the flip side of heaven Sheriff he bursts in, lookin’ to start some trouble Tell him to piss off and so begins the rumble Fists start flying, you can hear the glass breaking Grab my guitar and head for the exit Chorus Sheriff sees my move and he grabs my bandana Says, “Where you off to?” I say, “To Montana!” Hits me in the face and bashes me on the head I grab his gun, pull the trigger, he falls dead Chorus So here I am in jail, waiting for a noose My friend’s out the window, he’s here to spring me loose Pulls down the bars and now we’re on the run Throw a stick of dynamite in, just for fun Chorus Chorus

Sunlight’s blazing on the old Christmas tree and the ten speed sprinklers clicking and the tire swing swinging in the breeze She’s so cool she’s so cool Stolen candles and sleeping on a wooden floor tonight put this in your pocket or the light bulb may burn out in your life She’s so cool she’s so cool Hiding under the covers like a baby in the womb paints and pictures of the devil swallowing the moon She’s so cool she’s so cool She’s so cool she’s so cool
